Monday, September 28, 2009 will be remembered as a historic day for the Italian network. From this date, in fact, retiring the old process of registering domains. It still based on paper forms, which is to be replaced by a new process entirely digitized.
Let's see in detail what has changed.
The old "asynchronous procedures": the dear old LAR
Until recently, to register a domain. It was necessary to print, complete and return to the NIC (by post or fax), the famous letter of employment responsibilities, better known by the acronym LAR: it was a document when he who sought registration of the domain, after declaring who you are, sign a contract in which species of accepting a set of rules and took a good amount of responsibility on the use of the requested domain.
Simultaneously, the maintainer (subject, body or organization responsible for managing the domain) will send digitally to a form containing a series NIC technical information about the future management of the requested domain.
If both modules were correctly assigned to the NIC provides the domain within a couple of working days in case of problems, however, tended to lengthen the timing of even a few days.
The new "procedures synchronous"
Following the changes introduced, Italy finally realigns itself with other western countries in the management of domains by eliminating a procedure (that of LAR) unique.
As of September 28, in fact, for the registration of a domain. It is no longer necessary to send any paper document to the NIC (which now calls itself Registro.it) because the entire procedure is to be handled electronically through the new procedures based on the synchronous protocol EPP (Extensible Provisioning Protocol) that enables a coordinated and decentralized allocations.
Through this system (which is based on XML)-accredited registrars will be able to independently manage the registration procedures and ways mantenuimento domains for only the direct channel through telematics (managed, in fact, through the EPP) with the database of the NIC.
In essence, the untente will interface only with the registrar of choice for the practical management of the entire record, the registrar will then do the task telematics to update the databases of registered domain on the new NIC.
Registrar or maintainer?
The distinction is not purely linguistic.
When you go to register a new domain, you should pay close attention to the fact that the company you choose to define it either way.
The term "maintainer", in fact, define themselves as brokers who have not yet enabled the new synchronous process: in this case, therefore, normally be prepared to send the fax (the old procedure will remain active for two years).
If you want to avoid compiling the LAR, so remember to choose a "registrar" among those listed on the site of the NIC.
Some final observations
The novelty promises to greatly accelerate the registration practices and reduce the problems that very often, were due to errors at compile time of the applicant's LAR.
Obviously, the elimination of the LAR should not be construed as an exemption for new applicants from the rules that govern the proper use of netiquette and domains, binding rules for anyone requesting the assignment of a domain regardless of the signing of a any paper form.
