1. Choose the appropriate version for your needs

Ubuntu is now one of the most popular distributions between the operating systems that use the Linux kernel, it is a release created on the basis of another well-known distro, Debian. Compared to the latter, however, Ubuntu is suitable for desktop use, a feature that determined the success of that user with "non-technical" which previously had always taken the difficult approach to the penguin.

Ubuntu is not in itself a distribution very greedy in terms of required resources to the reference system, but it is possible to adopt the measures by which to make the OS more lightweight, powerful and easy to use.

Note:
During this short guide, we will describe some of the procedures through which to optimize your installation of Ubuntu, before it is necessary to emphasize the fact that all these techniques need to be addressed with caution and not until you make a back up complete their data, also remembers that it is always a good idea to test first the optimization procedures in a machine for the production (the famous "mule").

Before moving on to more technical tricks, you should refer to the simple rules of common sense that may be defined as the essential prerequisites for choosing the right version of Ubuntu:

  • use the desktop version (desktop edition) only if you want to install Ubuntu for home use, it is absolute fact of the release as "heavy" in terms of system resources required, this is due in particular to the presence graphical interface and a number of programs that use the server-oriented would not be required;
  • used the server version (server edition) if you want to take Ubuntu as a production environment for their Web sites, it is in itself a distribution already "optimized" for creating Internet server, no graphical interface and integrates accompanying applications specifically designed for use desktop-oriented, the absence of many unnecessary processes will also make the system more secure and lower the number of vulnerabilities that need to be remedied;
  • for those wishing to use Ubuntu in older machines is available a special version, called Alternate Edition, which provides a high level of customization and is designed for use in cars with no more than 256 MB of RAM, it's available in any case many of the features provided by the desktop version;
  • you should not install versions for PC netbooks, for architecture with fewer resources than conventional desktop computers, is in fact available for such a dedicated version called the Netbook Remix Edition, it lets you test the operating system on small portable devices without the need to make any changes, or if you want you will still be at all times the ability to install Ubuntu permanently through the usual procedure with graphical interface.
At the time of this discussion is written, the latest version available for Ubuntu is 9.10, also known as the Lucid Lynx, as it requires minimum 256 MB of RAM, although it is advisable to have at least twice, you also takes into account the fact that many video cards share the RAM making it largely unavailable to the system.
