In this article we will see how to make a candle with animated flame.

Note: the article was made using the version of Paint Shop Pro Photo X2, but the steps do not vary for any of the versions of Paint Shop Pro
To make the animation was used Animation Shop, a program that allows you to create animated gifs created by Jasc Software. The latest version is 3.11 available only in English.
Unfortunately since the Jasc was acquired by Corel not been released new versions of the product, for this reason, only interfaces perfectly with the versions of Jasc Paint Shop Pro, produced by (ie up to version 9).
E 'can still create the animated gif combining newer versions of Paint Shop Pro with Animation Shop, the only thing you can not do is, in fact, to export directly from the frames of animation in Animation Shop Paint Shop Pro and vice versa.

That we will perform the procedure is divided into two parts: the first part is the realization of the different movements of the candle flame, while the second part of our article we make the animation created by combining the different frames.
The frames are nothing more than simple jpegs that represent different moments of the animation.

To achieve our effect I chose to use this image that represents our starting point:

Open Paint Shop Pro and choose the image to work on. To open a file we can use the CTRL + O or click on:

 File -> Open

After opening the image you want, we can proceed with the execution of the movements of the flame. At this stage we realize six files, each one representing a different movement of the candle flame.

First we need to add a glow to the flame in order to make it more realistic, a real flame, in fact, has some jagged edges and produces a light surrounded by a faint orange glow. We create, therefore, to add a new level of the halo, by clicking on:

 Layers -> New Raster Layer

At this point you will get a window box where we can enter the name of the new layer, called Halo. Press Ok to give confirmation.

Now select the Brush tool from the toolbar. Notice that, when selecting the Brush tool contenstualmente, will open the Options bar (it is located below the menu bar).
The interior contains several parameters, to achieve the effect I have set the following values:

  • Form: rounded
  • Size: 148
  • Hardness: 20
  • Step: 15
  • Density: 100
  • Thickness: 64
  • Rotation: 0
  • Opacity: 40
  • Blend mode: Normal
At this point, after setting the brush with the values, we just set the color to use, click on the box of the foreground color and brushstroke, in the palette of materials, and selezionimao color below, the window dialogue that follows:
Now we can create the halo, by clicking once at the center of the flame, yielding the following result:
