Retouching a photograph means to perform a work of general improvement of the photo and then the subject of improvement by removing any physical imperfections.

These two things, seemingly simple, actually require a very careful and wise use of retouching tools, because we worry not to intervene in an excessive and intrusive on the subject of photography, especially when remodeling a photograph depicting a person .

The picture we're going to tweak is as follows:

Just shown in the photograph, some flaws are evident:
  • the lights are not balanced
  • the colors are very saturated
  • there are imperfections on the model's face
  • the color change of the photo is tending to magenta

The list of shortcomings is fairly long, but with Paint Shop Pro we can improve photos with a single step, using the Smart Photo Fix tool.
To open the window that will allow us to make many changes in one step, click on:

 Rule -> Smart Photo Fix

The window that opens is shown below:

The Smart Photo Fix command lets you adjust exposure and color balance by identifying the neutral areas of the photo (black, gray and white), which are recognized as sampling points.

As you can see, there are a number of options, ideally divided into 3 areas:

  1. Brightness Group: Set a value in the global control, shadows and lights, remembering that the settings make the picture more positive light, the darker the negative.
We put the value 17 for the Global Control, thus increasing the brightness of the photograph.
We insert the value 12 to control shadows, in order to accentuate the colors without changing too.
High lights to control by entering the value -6, in how much the picture is sovrasposta and in some areas is almost burnt.
  2. Saturation and Fire: As regards the saturation, we can set a positive (or negative) in the control make the colors more (or less) vibration. In this article we have decided to enter the value -4, with the aim of reducing slightly the saturation of an overexposed photo.
Fire control lets you set a value in order to improve the focus of the image, enter the value 71.
  3. Color Balance: selecting the check box Color Balance (activated by checking the Advanced Options check box) will appear in the photo you will notice that the sampling points of the automatic neutral areas of the photo (black, gray and white).
In addition to the default settings, we can create new points of sampling, and adjust the whites and blacks of the image by darkening or lightening pixels.
We put the value 15 for the control of Black, and the value of 3 for White.
