This article is dedicated to beginners, we will see how to install and configure the FileZilla FTP client to connect to our FTP web space and send (upload) and / or download (downloading) files and folders on our website.

For the uninitiated an FTP client is a software that allows you to manage connections by protoccolo FTP (File Transfer Protocol). Without going into technicalities (which here concern us very little) I just say how the FTP protocol is essential in the management of a website as it is "restricted access" to the webmaster of the files that make up the site. Using the FTP site's webmaster, therefore, may add, delete and overwrite files on his site, which users (obviously) can not do through the HTTP protocol (which is the "protocol hypertext navigation").

After this necessary premise (but not technical, I hope, fairly clear), let's go into more practical areas and see how access to FTP to our web space.

To do this we need munirci an FTP client. Market, of course, there are many, many paid and many others free.

This article will illustrate the use of open source FileZilla FTP client (and free) is widely used and appreciated.

First, access the official website of the Project Filezilla and download the latest release of Filezilla Client package (at this time 3.2.3.1) suitable for your operating system (Filezilla is available for Windows, Linux and Mac).

Once you've downloaded the package you install.
I am on a Windows system, so I opted for the executable version (. Exe).
Double click on the icon of the package:

  • After accepting the license agreement (cliccanbdo on "I agree") we will be asked to specify which system user may use Filezilla (in my case I selected "Only for me"); done this we go ...
  • select the components to install (I suggest you select all) and click on "Next";
  • now we are being asked to choose the installation path, if you have special preferences you can leave the path set by default;
  • the next step also allowed us to establish the Start Menu folder that will hold the reference to Filezilla (for example, we can choose the "Accessories");
Once this is done is to begin the installation process. Once finished, click on "Finish".
