Create pop art style images

Article written by Gianluca Rini

Pop art is an artistic movement that in the course of the twentieth century, has had a huge spread in different countries of the world thanks to his inspiration in simple and popular subjects.
Anyone can try their hand at creating works inspired by the art style and graphics using applications such as, for example, The Gimp. What we need is to have any photo (possibly of a face) can develop in order to create our first virtual work of art.

We proceed by opening our image (in my case I chose a close-up of Marilyn Monroe) with the program. If we should modify the brightness and contrast of the menu items from color, brightness-contrast. If we set the values that make it more clear that the face then we're going to color with different shades.
Values can be changed at will. In the example 80 was chosen for brightness and 55 contrast. Confirm by clicking the OK button.

Now we modify the saturation of colors across the color menus, components, mixer channels. Here we have to move at will the bars of green and blue to the left to make the image brighter in some areas (which we're going to color later). If our starting image is in color remember to put the checkmark in the box, monochrome, black and white to make it and then have a starting point for subsequent changes.

Now here is our starting image from which we will begin to create our works of art.

Open, if not already present, the Layers dialog (menu windows, dockable windows, levels). Create a new layer by choosing New Layer from the menu levels, leaving the size unchanged and setting the fill type of transparency.
Drag, in the Layers dialog, the newly created downward so that it is below the level of background with our image. Right click the new layer and choose Edit Attributes level. Call it, for example, "color".
Clicking again on this level to select and fill in the color of our choice (helping with the color palette and the button color fill both of which are accessible from the toolbar). The result should look something like the following.
Now, from the layers palette, select the background layer and choose the selection tool freehand.
This is the part where greater attention is required, and precise, because our job is to select the outline of the image in order to separate the area (the face) to be filled with a color different from that used for the background.
Click again on the level "color" to select it, choose a new color from the Color palette and fill the selection with color fill tool.
If we have to paint other parts of the image we proceed in the same way. Clicking once on the background layer, select the new area to color, click once on the color level and fill the area with a new color.

At the end we save our work and repeat it from the beginning with three other combinations of colors, to get a result similar to that of the underlying image.

We made our effect pop art Andy Warhol style!
