Create multiple custom brushes

Article written by Gianluca Rini

Through this tutorial we will learn to create multiple custom brushes in the Gimp graphics program.
This is a very simple operation that will allow us to quickly take advantage of new tools for the creation or modification of our digital images.

We can, for example, save the graphic forms that we use often in the form of brushes with the same shape but different color.

We open our program and then create a new blank document, the File menu, new. For the example we set a measure of 65x65 pixels. Remember to select the advanced options in the background transparency. Confirm your choices by clicking the OK button.

At this point we have the basis on which to work for the creation of our own multiple brush. We proceed by creating new levels that will be needed through the menu level, new level, keeping the settings we used for the creation of new document with the original background layer.

Create a new layer for each additional color we want to assign to the brush, following the same procedure. Here we have created two levels and we called them, and Brush 1 Brush 2. Our window of levels, as you can see in the picture below, you will then present three elements, the two levels and the newly created first, the background that if we want, we can rename the label with such brush 3 to make his name with that of the other layers.

Now we must draw our images or create the shades to be assigned to the various types of the same brush. In our example, since we have created multiple brushes with different colors, we decided to make each level a different shade of color. In this way we will have a brush with the same multi-form (that of a square), but at the same time with three different shades of color, which may for example be of the nuances that we often use in our work with The Gimp.

When we finished, we click and choose save as in the selected file type (by extension) the voice gimp brush (animated) gih, as seen from the image below. Insert your name for our box at the top of the brush in the same window and click on the Save button later.

In the new window that opens, remember to enter the number of levels that we have created for the brush box in the ranks. In our case we have to insert the value 3. Leave the value in dimension 1. Next to "ranks" for example, the incremental value we choose to use three shades of color alternately.

Let's save our brush on the desktop and then move this file in the folder accessible via the following path:

 C: / Programmi/GIMP-2.0/share/gimp/2.0/brushes

Now we open a new blank document of The Gimp and choose the Brush tool from the Tools menu, drawing brush. We open the window on the panels to see our new creation, through the menu windows, dockable windows, paint brushes.

If we do not see your new brush a few times we click on the refresh button at the bottom right of the small window.

Now we can select our new brush and fun to make our color images.
