The term starburst (literally "starburst") identifies, in the graphic, an image made up of different colored lines that explode outward from the center of the figure, creating an effect that resembles a sort of "explosion of light" stylized . We see below how to achieve a figure of this type using the free software The Gimp.

In our example we will create a halo of colored lines, rather gaudy style 70s, which are directed from the center outwards.

Open a new document in the program of work, giving it the size that we prefer, and setting the background color of white. We move in the Toolbox and select the gradient, as shown in the figure below.

In the selection of color options, the two rectangular boxes immediately below the tool, choose, background color, a hue that can better meet the needs of our work and we confirm our choice by clicking on the OK button.
In the options pane, choose the window shade down, as a gradient, the voice from FG to BG (RGB) and in the drop-down menu select the entry form radial. We leave the other settings with the defaults.
Then we click with the left mouse button in the center of the frame of our image and drag the mouse pointer to one of the edges. Release the button to see the result. The central part should be slightly lighter than the outside of the window. If we do not like the result, we repeat the first operation by dismissing the last action (Edit menu, cancels gradient).
We apply now the effect of vertical stripes of a different color, on which we will later apply a distortion.
