Before showing how to change a drive letter should explain what a drive.

In computing the term drive will indicate the hardware unit responsible for reading / writing data on a data storage medium. Very often the term "drive" is confused with "driver", with the latter term refers to a special software for the management of devices (the driver is the software that allows your computer to communicate with its hardware).

Examples are the floppy disk drive, the optical disc recorder, hard drive, the flash-drive, etc..
On Windows, the drives are marked with a capital letter, and each one is always the same letter by default.
For example, for the hard disk is always used the letter "C", if there is a partition of the hard drive, is also used the letter "D".
As for the floppy disk is used, the "A" and the CD uses the letter "D" (if not already used to a hard disk partition) and the letter "E".
The letter "F" is usually used for removable devices, such as pendrive.

In this article we will see how to change a drive letter, both the operating system Windows 7 on Windows XP.

WINDOWS 7

To open the Computer Management window, right click on 'Computer icon.
In the menu that appears when you click on the item management:

At this point we will open the Computer Management window, shown in the following:
The window has three columns: the first are three tree menu, which manage rispettivamnete the "System Tools", the "storage unit" and finally the "Services and Applications". In the second column instead are displayed instead of the submenu items presetni one of the categories listed above.
The third column contains the list of actions made in this dialog.

To see the storage devices, we have to click on Storage (in the first column).
This will open a submenu containing the Disk Management entry.

For modifcare the letter must not do is right click on a volume and select Change Drive Letter and Paths.
In the window that opens (shown in the picture below), we can choose the operation to be performed on the selected volume.
We will choose the "Change":
At this point, we can change the letter, click sullla black arrow located next to the letter, which currently has the device.
This will open a drop down menu where we can choose a letter that we want to assign to the volume:
After completing this operation, press Ok to give confirmation.

It will open two other windows confirmed that there chiederanmno for the operation carried out, informing us of the risks of that change.
Press OK to both windows.

Now the selected drive will be assigned the letter that we have chosen.
