How do I start the System File Checker?

Windows Vista has a useful feature to verify that all system files are located in the right directories and are not defective. This feature is called System File Checker (SFC).

This tool can be started from the command prompt. To do so follow these steps:

  • Click on Start
  • All Programs> Accessories
  • Select Command Prompt, click with right mouse button
  • From the context menu select Run as Administrator
  • Inside the prompt type: sfc / scannow and press enter
At this point, which will scan may take several minutes. If trouble is detected will be asked to insert the CD / DVD installation in order to repair damaged items.
